United Nations Sustainable Development Framework (2018 – 2022) signed between the United Nations and the Government of Jordan

Amman, (5 December 2017) – Today the Government of Jordan and the United Nations in Jordan officially signed the United Nations Sustainable Development Framework (UNSDF) for the period 2018-2022. In a ceremony held at the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation, His Excellency the Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, Mr. Imad N. Fakhoury, and the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Jordan, Mr. Anders Pedersen, signed the UNSDF on behalf of the Government and the UN Country Team in Jordan respectively.

The new framework constitutes a renewed partnership between the UN and the Government of Jordan, and aims to work towards a more sustainable path to development, prosperity, peace, and security. The framework, which pledges to “leave no one behind,” focuses particularly on benefiting youth, women and the most vulnerable groups such as; the poor, refugees, host communities, persons in remote areas of the Kingdom, persons with disabilities and migrant workers, among others.

As a strategic planning framework for cooperation, the UNSDF provides a basis for increased collaboration, coherence and effectiveness of UN support in Jordan. Under the framework, the UN in Jordan commits to become a new-generation Country Team that will pursue three focused, interconnected outcomes in pursuit of Jordan’s development objectives as follows:

Strengthened institutions in Jordan at national and local levels, whereby all institutions are more responsive, inclusive, accountable, transparent and resilient.

Empowered people especially the vulnerable, proactively claim their rights and fulfil their responsibilities for improved human security and resilience.

Enhanced opportunities for inclusive engagement of people living in Jordan in the economic, social, environmental and political spheres.

Moreover, ensuring a stronger link between humanitarian and development action is central to the UNSDF and will serve to reinforce UN support for national priorities.

During his remarks, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, Anders Pedersen highlighted that the main objective of the UN is to support the Government of Jordan, to realise its national development priorities expressed in the Executive Development Programme, Economic Growth Plan, Jordan Response Plan, and other priorities highlighted in the National Strategies, towards achieving the Jordan Vision 2025, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and other international human rights and development obligations of the Kingdom. “The UNSDF demonstrates the commitment of the UN to work towards a more integrated approach and enhanced humanitarian, development and peace nexus that will support Jordan in responding to the humanitarian crisis while working towards sustainable development,” said Pedersen.

The UNSDF has been signed by all resident and non-resident UN agencies in Jordan and will be officially launched in January 2018 in Jordan.
